Halloween in South Korea

Halloween in South KoreaHappy Halloween!

So how is Halloween in South Korea celebrated?

Well, it isn’t really. At least, not like it is here.

Growing up in the states, there was always a mad rush to figure out what to be for Halloween. Our stand by costume was always a witch. Isn’t that everyone’s stand by costume??

Once you had a costume figured out, there were parades in elementary school and the ever important trick or treating in the evening (not that I ever went, but that’s a story for another time).

I can’t imagine a childhood without the Halloween hoopla. But that’s how it is in Korea. Or at least that’s how it was. Now, little kids can go to hagwons (English learning schools) for trick or treating.

It used to be that if people did feel like doing something for Halloween, it really centered around little kids and non-Koreans (i.e. foreigners). But now it’s definitely gained popularity as a reason to get drunk and dress scantily. You know, just like it is here.ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

Now there are pub crawls, costume contests, and even zombie runs!

Hopefully, you’re in the Halloween spirit by now. But if not, check out my Korean scary movies post and my not-so scary Korean movies post to help put you in the mood.

Happy Halloween in Korean!

Have a safe and wonderful Halloween! Let me know how it goes in the comments!
