Romantic Korean Ghost Stories

Romantic Korean Ghost StoriesRomantic Korean Ghost Stories

I thought to get into the Halloween spirit I would talk about scary movies. Only these aren’t scary movies at all. Although they may be startling at times when something unexpected jumps out (aka cheap scares).

There are ghosts in these stories and they’re even categorized as ghost stories. However, they’re really about love overcoming that little obstacle, death.

So these are really for people who don’t like scary movies but like romance. ☺

List of Romantic Korean Ghost Stories

I ranked them according to what I think is the scariest to the least scary.

  1. Spellbound (2011) – This is the only movie on the list. It’s a little less than two hours long. Son Ye Jin plays a depressed young lady who is haunted by ghosts. And Lee Min Ki is the hapless magician whose fear battles his attraction to her. I’d say it’s the scariest flick on the list but it really is hardly scary. There are some jumpy parts and it’s darker than the others. As in, a lot of it is at night and in dark places.
  2. Master’s Sun (2013) – This is my favorite on the list. It’s 17 episodes and stars two of my favorite actors, Gong Hyo Jin (queen of romcoms) and So Ji Sub. It was this movie that made me a fan of theirs. She portrays a loner insomniac who sees ghosts. And he portrays a greedy CEO. When fate brings them together, both their worlds are turned upside down. It was written by the Hong sisters who are well known for their romantic comedies.
  3. Let’s Fight Ghost (2016) – A butt-kicking female ghost, Kim So Hyun, teams up with an exorcist, Ok Taec Yeon, to put evil spirits to rest. There’s obviously a burgeoning romance as they try to solve how she became a ghost in the first place. It’s 16 episodes long.
  4. Arang and the Magistrate (2012) – Shin Min Ah plays a sassy ghost who harasses a government official, Lee Joon Ki, in to helping with the mystery of how and why she died. This series is 20 episodes.
  5. The Night Watchman’s Journal (2014) – This is a ghost busting story during the Joseon era. The plot deals with a romance in the face of evil spirits and classicism. It’s 24 episodes long but it goes by really quickly.
  6. Oh My Ghostess (2015) – A ghost who had a talent for cooking, Kim Seul Gi, possesses a line cook, Park Bo Young, as a means to continue living. Jo Jung Suk plays a famous chef who owns and operates the restaurant that Park Bo Young’s character works. Calamity ensues along with a burgeoning romance when the truth comes out. It’s 16 episodes long and thoroughly entertaining, but totally not scary.

I’m sorry, I didn’t go into too much detail for each because I didn’t want to give anything away!

By the way, I provided Amazon links of the movies for your convenience but it’s much easier to instantly watch them on Dramafever. You can find these romantic Korean ghost stories there and lots of other titles, not just Korean as well.

Scary stories are great sometimes. But other times you just feel like watching a romance, albeit with a supernatural twist. 😏 Watch them by yourself, since they’re not-so scary, or with your sweetie. Binge watching one of these would be a great way to spend your 100 day anniversary!

I’m going to settle in with some Korean popcorn…ooh, or whip up some Korean egg bread (it’s silly easy to make) for a romantic Korean ghost stories marathon!

Have you seen any of these yet? Are there any you would suggest I add? Share in the comments!
